Business Meeting Minutes January 4, 2010

OFFICERS PRESENT: John Bulmer, Dan Clark, Diane Giddings stood in as Secretary

MEMBERS: 34

VISITORS: WELCOME BACK SNOWBIRDS! Good to see you back.

TREASURERS REPORT: $5066.55 (December report)

OLD BUSINESS:

Licensing the trailer back to the club: The License Office stipulates that any licensed vehicle must be insured. However, NO insurance company will insure a standalone trailer. Further investigation yielded no new results. The law was rechecked and verified. We have two options: (1) will a club member accept ownership of the trailer, and let the club reimburse them for insurance costs. Or, (2) Store the trailer’s contents in our storage room and sell the trailer. The members recommended tabling the issue at this time.

The contents of the trailer must be inventoried. Dan Clark and Jerry Heinicke will accomplish that. Can the contents of the trailer be insured? Concern was expressed about the risk of loss of the contents. Dan will make an inquiry as to whether the contents would be covered under our current policy.

The Florida Woodcarvers Roundup will be held Wednesday, March 24-27 in Zephyrhills. Larry Nowell has agreed to hold a two day class on carving wood spirits. He will be teaching the Tyrolean Woodcarving methods he learned in Austria. Class is tentatively scheduled for March 29, 30. Cost is $50. Make your reservation now. See Lu Myers

Lakeland Public Library display: Jerry Heinicke is coordinating the open event. Bring your carvings to Jerry now for the display. Carvings should be no taller than 8". The setup will be February 1.

NEW BUSINESS:

Duane Bickmire reported that it is with great sadness that Barbara Oar passed away in September. Ross Oar is reported to be one of the instructors at the Florida Woodcarving Roundup this year. Ross and Barbara had been vendors at our show for many years.

Duane also made an announcement of the upcoming Alafia River Rendezvous on January 22-23.

Mary Jane Chapman passed out the refreshment list for Business Meetings. Thank you Mary Jane for coordinating this, and thank you members for participating.

Florida Balsa was introduced, and members were invited to take a piece to carve.

Charlie Gribble reported that we had a slate of officers to propose for the upcoming election:

John Bulmer – Treasurer, Norma Jean Stevens – Secretary, Lu Myers – Vice President, and Dan Clark –President. The club voted to accept the proposed slate of officers.

SHOW BUSINESS:

The Show Committee will meet Tuesday, January 26 at 6:30 pm. Flyers were passed out, and members were asked to display them at public places. The applications are forth coming.

A volunteer list was passed around to request help in various aspects of the show. Thank you all for helping. Jerry Heinicke moved we purchase banners advertising the show. Motion passed. Brian Waistell moved we create a banner for a "Featured Artist" at the show, and donate $50 to the Featured Artist in appreciation of their effort to help our event. Motion passed. Members recommended that an Admission Price be listed on the flyers. Future flyers will contain that info. Existing flyers will be updated by the members.

A request was made to lower the cost of entry to the show to $3. Questions arose over the show’s cash flow and profitability. The members recommended that a budget be developed to determine whether the admission charge could be lowered, and that the Show Committee determines what the price should be. Approximately 21 members felt it should stay at $4, and 14 preferred $3. No votes for $5, 2 or 1.

Janet Miault showed wood cutouts she would like to introduce a children’s carving event at the show. Children would use sandpaper attached to a bow to form the cutouts, and paint the carving. 4 members volunteered to cut out at least 10 pieces. Janet explained that this activity is very popular at her show in Ontario. Volunteers will be asked to assist Janet in the class.

SHOW & TELL:

Jack Smith showed three marvelous Fire Etchings, and his piece for the cane. Joe Miziuk showed two beautiful birds. Harley Haubenstricker showed a magnificent Iris. You’re not gonna paint that are you, Harley?

March News Letter 2010

Ridge Woodcarvers Club
Business Meeting March 2, 2010

www.ridgewoodcarversclub.org

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 by President Dan Clark.  Two members of the board were present, Dan Clark and Norma-Jean Stevens.

27 members were in attendance and one visitor and new member Dick Hall.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Janet Miault stated that she was still helping anyone who was interested in bark carving on Tuesdays during our regular carving sessions and that she still had bark available for sale for anyone who wanted some.  Jack Smith announced that he will be starting another wood burning class in April at the Tuesday carving sessions all who are interested should get with Jack regarding tools and/or materials they will need.  Don't forget that Larry Nowell will be teaching Spirit carving on March 29th & 30th. He still has some openings and the cost is $50.00.  More information is available on our Web page.  The class will meet at Jim Hameris' business on Wallace Road.  Jim offered this location in exchange for free tuition to the class.  It was motioned and passed that our club pay for Jim's tuition for the use of his facilities.

A reminder of the Florida Roundup at Zephyrhills for March 24th through 27th was announced.  This is a great opportunity for our area because this event is so close to us this year.  The agenda promises to have  classes that should appeal to a number of carvers.

Dan asked if anyone would be interested in having an Artist come in to teach members of our club.  Jerry Heinicke offered to teach a class if anyone was interested.  He will get back to us at a later date when he can work it into his schedule. Several people have already indicated that they would like such a class.
Jerry Heinicke, Harley Haubensticker and Jack Buie were given a BIG thank you for the Library display.  Interest in the display has been very positive.

A reminder to all members to pay their dues was tendered and discussion about the club's trailer was tabled to the April meeting.

SHOW BUSINESS: A list of volunteer jobs that still need to be filled for the show was passed around.  We still need a person to write the article for Chit Chats that has been done by Lu Myers in the past.  Anyone interested in taking on this project please contact Dan Clark.  Jerry Heinicke stated that we already have registration for 30 tables from vendors.  This appears to be the largest number ever requested to our knowledge.  He also said we have requests for 28 display tables.  Anyone interested in having a straight table should notify him, otherwise 60" round tables will be provided.  A motion was made and approved to rent any additional straight tables that will be necessary for display and the judging competition over and above what is available at the Church.

Posters for the show were provided by Dan Clark for members to take and put up.  The cost to the club was $22.00 for a hundred.  A friend of Dan's donated the art work for the posters.  They should be very effective in promoting the event.  Please try to pre register your projects for judging as this will help Jerry and Mildred in having things ready on the morning of the show.  However, entries for judging will still be accepted the morning of the show.

Jack Smith presented the club with a door prize from David and Sally Nye from Michigan who donated his speciality of an exquisite Fan Bird.  Jack donated one of his wood burnings, a matted bird and it was announced that Chipping Away has donated two $25.00 gift certificates for door prizes.  This is only a sampling of the donations that have been made to make the show interesting.

CHILDREN'S MUSEUM FESTIVAL: Is scheduled for April 17th at Munn Park in Lakeland which is across from Harry's restaurant and they expect 1000 to 3000 young people to attend this event.  Dan says that they are very excited about our participation this year.  We will need to have about 200 pieces available at our booth.  Volunteers are still needed to help with this project.

NEW BUSINESS:  There was a discussion on the renewal of our membership in the Polk Art's Alliance for next year and it was motioned and passed not to renew our membership because the main reason for membership was a Web page on their site and our show being mentioned in the Artifacts Magazine they produce.  We have been left out of the magazine for the last two years.

The Club had in its possession a picture of a Leopard that was donated by June Petrie before her passing and a blind auction was held last year at the show in Bartow with a minimum bid of $50.00.  We did not get a bid to meet the minimum at the show.  We have a member who appreciates the art of June and is willing to buy the picture.  It was moved and passed to let Janet Miault purchase the picture for that amount.  Janet also gave some judging and displaying tips that she had gathered from a carving judge.

Jean Crittenden displayed the cane blocks that were handed in to her and also the eagle head carved by Larry Nowell for the head and the base that was carved by Tom Wagner.  Tom will be putting the cane together for the show.

SHOW AND TELL:  We were treated to the carvings by Joe Misiuk, Jack Buie and Tom Wagner and a display of what can be done with a wood spoon by Janet Miault, Diane Giddings, Brian McGregor and Marcia Conklin.

Meeting was adjourned and treats provided by Duane & Georgia Bickmire and Dianne Giddings were enjoyed by all.

April News Letter 2010

Ridge woodcarvers club

Lakeland, FL

Business Meeting April 6, 2010

www.ridgewoodcarversclub.org

The meeting was called to order at 6:30PM by President Dan Clark.  Three members of the board were present, Dan Clark Lu Myers, Vice President and Norma-Jean Stevens, Secretary.

29 members were in attendance.  There were no visitors present.

No Treasurer's report was given because John Bulmer was not in attendance.

OLD BUSINESS:  Dan gave a report on how much it was going to cost to insure the Show Trailer, discussion followed and it was determined that the contents of the trailer could be stored in our room at the MacArthur Center and that the trailer should be sold.  The Show committee will look into what the estimated worth of the trailer is and it will be discussed further at next months meeting.  We possibly have two people in our club that may be interested in buying it.

Janet Miault gave a report on the upcoming Children's Museum Festival to be held in Munn Park on April 17th.

Our club is having a hands on tent during the festival.  Janet is planning on having soap carving for the children and passed around a sheet for volunteers to help her during the event.  She also suggested that it would be nice for anyone who would like to come and carve during the event to give the kids an idea of what can be accomplished with a knife and a piece of wood.

Jack Smith announced that he would be having a woodburning class starting at 2:00PM on April 13th and also on April 20th if wanted.

NEW BUSINESS:  Under the bylaws of the club the board can appoint a Member at Large, the board asked Jerry Heinicke if he would join the board and he accepted.

SHOW BUSINESS: All said that they had heard lots of compliments, it was acknowledged that the Church was a very good place to hold the show.  Dan thanked everyone for their contributions to the show and all the help that make it a success. It was also noted that the Boy Scouts from the Church did an exceptional job at providing the refreshments and food for the show. Jerry stated that they had not made as much as they had hoped and a suggestion was made that our club make a donation to their group.

The rest of the meeting was devoted to critiquing the Carving Show.  Many of the things that the members thought could have gone better boiled down to the same solution and that was there should have been two to six more tables for displaying the competition pieces for better display. Jerry stated that this could be done because the scale he was given was inaccurate for his layout.

1. Tag system was disorganized, category signs should have been on the tables at setup

2.  Possible limit on size of entries.

3.  More space needed inside ropes around displays.

4.  Limit number of entries per person.

5.  Ribbons should have been on entries earlier.

6. Items that do not stand up should be required to have stands.

Other suggestions were that the members get to the building at least a half hour before the late registration time to get set up and ready to go.  Also, to try to set the registration up out of the way of the members and/or vendors bringing in their items to be set up on show day this could also be accomplished by the members getting into the building earlier.

We need to be sure we have a wood vendor next year. More security against shoplifters. Outside sponsors for door prizes. We should have a board to post the door prize numbers on for those who are out of microphone range when the number is called instead of just calling numbers until a winner is found. We also should have someone who is in charge of the Peoples Choice award to carry the process through from beginning to end.

Members who attend other carving shows in the area could deliver our flyers to be available for those interested.  Tickets need to be more organized so that we can get a more accurate count of those attending and that we don't miss charging for spouses of the outside entrants who apparently got in free this year.  The Show Committee will consider all the suggestions and report back to the members at a future meeting.

Tom Wagner reported that they had taken in $223.00 in the raffle for the cane and the winner David who is the house parent for the home where Jerry Heinicke's son lives was to receive the cane this coming weekend and Jerry reported that the residents of the home were very excited about the fact that it was to be kept and displayed at their home.

Jean Crittenden was asked to take charge of the Friendship cane for another year and Jack Smith  and Jerry Heinicke volunteered to make up the blocks for carving.  Tom Wagner will be putting the cane together again.

SHOW AND TELL:  Joe Misiuk showed a bird he had carved and painted and Ed Gustavel showed a prototype of a carving/woodburning stand that he is working on.

The meeting was adjourned by Dan at 7:45PM and refreshments were provided by Lavonia Hutto.

Next meeting will be at the MacArthur Center on May 4th, 2010 at 6:30

Classes would be Tuesday evenings at the MacArthur Center during normal carving hours. The cost of the project is being determined, and will be disclosed soon. If you are interested in this project, please inform Dan Clark. Additional info is forthcoming and will be forwarded to all who have indicated an interest.

Our Christmas Party is scheduled for the December 1. Last year Nancy Coss did a magnificent job of organizing the event. However, she has other commitments this time. Should RWC utilize local art festivals as a medium to create community visibility and attract new members? Two events are upcoming: Lakeland Art Festival (November 6-7) and the Lake Mirror Classic Car Festival (October 17). Each event attracts an attendance of several thousand people. There is a cost of approximately $100 to have a display. Participating members are able to sell their work, if so desired. Some of the events are juried and have prize money.
