OLD BUSINESS

Carving in the Park resumes January 26.  Regular schedule is 2nd and 4th Saturdays 9 am 

The new carving class in Helen Berry Park at FPH has been temporarily suspended. 

Polk Historical Museum Display:  Bruce Bupp reports that no carver was turned away, and all the cabinets were filled.  If you’ve not seen it – go!  Its extremely worthwhile.  Carvings will be removed on February 28. 

RWC Website – take a look.  Lu Myers is doing a spectacular job.  

Anyone wanting to sign up for Larry Nowell‘s carving class.  Notify Lu Myers ASAP.

SHOW BUSINESS 

RWC Annual Woodcarving Show:  March 8, 2008.  Please sell your show tickets in advance.  Bud Evans and Chau will be present again this year.  Vendor signup seems slow this year.  Flyers are needed to be passed out.

Auburndale Library would like to host our display in June 08.  Bruce Bupp will have more details.

Show Cane – Tom Wagner is again organizing a Cane to be raffled this year.  Please turn in your pieces ASAP.  So far, 3 are submitted.  The top and bottom are turned and ready. 

The Florida Woodcarvers Roundup is March 30 to April 4.  Many outstanding teachers will be offering carving classes.  A direct link to their website can be found on the RWC website. 

Harley informed us of QR.  QR is a cut cure product available at Mercy Community Pharmacy.  It enables quick coagulation to stop bleeding.  Mercy contact info is 293-0300.  362 Third St NW, Winter Haven, FL. 

Tom Hutto is offering a $25 gift certificate to the person selling the most tickets for our upcoming show.

Warren Slack presented an excellent demo on wood burning feathers.

 Ron Roberts won the raffle.

 SHOW/TELL; Janet Miault presented a work in progress;  the Moose.  Joe Stasiak showed us what we could do with bamboo.  Joe Misiuk showed  reliefs of a Maple Leaf, Eagle and Deer, an Indian and human face, and Sophia Lauren.  Jean Crittenden displayed a Swan and an Egret.  Jack Smith brought us several of his wood burnings;  The Treasure Coast Club, a Northern Rough Wing Sparrow, the Flag Raising at Iwo Jima, and Downtown.  Tom Hutto showed as a Kinkade like Town Scene, and his latest sculpture of the Ibis.  Duane Bickmire showed us a display case of earrings.

Polk Historical Museum Display:  Carvings need to be removed on February 28, 9:30–11:30 am.

Paul Coss expressed appreciation to all who displayed carvings, and especially to Bruce Bupp and Harley Haubenstricker for their work in setting up the displays.

 SHOW BUSINESS

 RWC Annual Woodcarving Show:  March 8, 2008.  Please sell your show tickets in advance.  35 pieces have been registered so far.  Table clips were ordered for the new tables.  A Sign up sheet was passed around for setting up and taking down, and for setting up the pieces for judging.  Mary Jane Chapman volunteered to get the donuts:  10 dozen.  Bring your own food.  Cost to enter is $3 for members per item entered.  Bring your other carvings for display.  Tables can be shared.  The Friendship Cane will be raffled at $1 Per ticket, or 3 for $2.  PASS OUT FLYERS!

Artifacts magazine lists our Show on page 4.  The Ledger had an article on the Show in the East Polk version last week.

Garand Lu Myers presented the RWC website.  Outstanding marks to a job well done.

 The club passed an amendment to the By-laws that changes terms of RWC Officers.  Officers will now be elected to a two year term.  Two positions will be elected annually.  This year the President and Treasurer will serve for 1 year.  The Vice President and Secretary for two years.

 The club also passed an amendment that suspends business meetings during the period of June thru September.  The club will continue to meet to carve on all Monday evenings except holidays.

 Elections:  The following were elected to officer positions:  President – Jerry Heinicke, Vice President – Jack Smith, Treasurer – John Bulmer, Secretary – Dan Clark. Congratulations to everyone!

 The club also voted to have the next business meeting on March 3, 2008 (the first Monday) to accommodate any pre show issues.

 Ron Roberts is missing a favorite Buck Brothers gouge.  If you see it, please let him know

 Ben Bassford won the raffle.SHOW/TELL;  Janet Miault show Barkwood Carvings. (and was willing to teach a class on carving Barkwood).  Dianne Giddings displayed carvings of Santa, a Cypress Knee, and a Mallard Duck.  Al Pogue showed his Duck decoy with grandchildren’s teeth embedded inside.  Joe Misiuk treated us to a red Breasted Nut Hatch Bird.  Roger Chapman brought us a Pine Nut Carving.  Fascinating works by excellent Carvers.  Thanks for the treats!

Polk Historical Museum Display:  Bruce Bupp expressed his appreciation for all who participated.  Jack Smith verified how beautiful the display was!

Friendship Cane; Tom Wagner showed pictures of the past two canes.  One was a walking stick; the other was a full cane.  This year’s piece contains 15 pieces, and will be a walking stick.

SHOW BUSINESS

RWC Annual Woodcarving Show:  March 8, 2008.  Please sell your show tickets in advance.  Georgia reviewed a list of members who signed up to help.  Show setup is Friday at 1 pm.  The doors will open Saturday at 6 am for vendors to set up.  8 pieces are registered for amateur to date.  Door prize donations are requested.  Make it known now if you need a name tag; see Duane Bickmire.

 SHOW/TELL: Joe Misiuk showed 2 birds; an Eastern Bluebird and a Plover.  Sue Moore brought us her freshly finished portrait of her grandson that was carved in Larry Nowell’s recent class.  Yves Lymberger displayed a Siamese cat in butternut.  It was composed of 11 pieces laminated with grain inverted.  Yves says he doesn’t sand, but uses a cabinet scraper.  Joe Stasiak managed a bamboo splitting demo (again) and donated the strands for whiskers.  Steve French showed his recent ball in a box with rings, which will become part of the Friendship cane.

Business Meeting Minutes April 14, 2008

OLD BUSINESS:

  • Carving in the Park has resumed in April.

  • MacArthur Center Woodcarving hours 2pm -8 pm All Mondays

  • Paul Coss: Asked if the display at the Polk County Historical Museum was worth the effort. Many members responded affirmatively.  If we would like to repeat it, we should plan well in advance.

  • Tom Wagner reported that the Friendship Cane netted $189 in ticket sales. Ten club members volunteered to carve additional pieces for next year. It was approved to do another Cane for the 09 show. Congratulations Tom. You organized a great effort this year

  • An opportunity to have Pete LeClair teach a class was presented. Class size minimum is 10, max 15. 3 days $100 plus hosting or hotel costs.

    NEW BUSINESS:

    Auburndale Library Display: Jack Smith reported that the space available for the display had been significantly reduced. Jack will organize the display. See Jack if you want to put a piece in.

    Nancy Coss suggested that we have a covered dish Christmas Party at MacArthur Center instead of at a restaurant. The idea became a motion and was passed. RWC will provide the meat. Nancy will chair event. Paul Coss believed that the event would enable club members to better interact and fellowship. Brian Waistell reported that past attempts resulted in an inadequate supply of meat. Jean Crittenden suggested someone be delegated to portion it.

    The next business meeting will be our last Business Meeting until September.

     

    SHOW BUSINESS

    507 visitors attended the Annual Show. 85 pieces were submitted for judging by 27 individuals. Show expenses were $250 materials, 165 new clips, 226 table rental (19), 550 ribbons, 700 prize money, 300 facilities rental, 200 judges. A motion was passed to schedule the next show on 3-14-09. Duane Bickmire reported that he had negative comments about the show coinciding with the Bloomin Arts Festival. Other members related that they had only heard positive feedback. Duane reported that he had attended a meeting which attempted to provide organization to the woodcarving shows in Florida. They were addressing issues relating to judging, and scheduling vendors. The President of the St. Lucie carving club organized the event. Duane changed the name of the show to the Ridge Woodcarving Art Show. A show steering committee will meet April 28.

    Janet Miault questioned how the show’s categories are structured. Jack Smith agreed to research the issue. Bark carving was suggested as a new category. Janet also volunteered to do a bark carving demo at the 09 show.

    Wood chips in the carpet was an issue that surfaced. Next year, any carving must be done with a covering over the floor.

    Our snowbird friends: Please bring some carvings with you next year to include in the 09 show.

    Margie Augustine and Rick Woods donated beautiful lumber for RWC to sell. Thank you Margie and Rick!

    SHOW & TELL: Janet Miault showed her version of a Bellamy Eagle that she carved at the Florida Woodcarvers Roundup. Joe Misiuk showed a beautiful Scarlett Tanager bird.

    Friendship Cane; Jean Crittenden “volunteered” to lead the charge for new pieces to be carved for the ’09 Cane.    Let’s start now!

    Carving will continue from 2 pm to 8 pm at McArthur Center on Mondays

    Auburndale Library Exhibit:  Bring in your pieces now and give to Jack Smith.   Only 2 Mondays left before Jacks sets it all up.

    Wood donated by Marge and Rick is now available for sale.

    Jack Smith read a Thank You letter from FL Presbyterian Homes for a past contribution.

     SHOW BUSINESS

    The club made approximately $1500 from the ’08 show.  A suggestion was made that RWC have a volunteer at the Bloomin Arts info Booth to give directions to the RWC show

    Next year’s carving show will now be MARCH 7.  This is a new date.

    This is the last business meeting of the season.  Next meeting September 10, 2008.

    Jean Crittenden showed a beautifully finished portrait of her granddaughter.  She started the  carving in Larry Nowell’s class.  Duane Bickmire showed his cedar blow gun and darts.  Dan Clark showed a carved hope chest. 

    Raffle:  Joe Stasiak won the raffle.  And afterwards the club enjoyed a bon voyage party for Bruce and Audrey Bupp.

     OLD BUSINESS:

    Carving in the Park.  Meetings are 2nd and 4th Saturdays 9 am.  Carving resumes 9-13 and 27

    McArthur Center:  Carving hours are 2 pm to 8 pm.  We have not had any evening carvers during the summer.  Carvers are encouraged to carve past 6 pm.  Construction is set to begin shortly, but we are welcome to continue using the center.

    Carving Cane for the 09 Show:  Jean Crittenden has colored photos for ideas and pieces are ready to be picked up.  

     SHOW BUSINESS

     Discussion was held on what date in March to have the show.  March 7 was again confirmed as our show date.  The show has been renamed: “The 17th Annual Art of Woodcarving Show.  No other changes are under consideration.

     Jack Smith requested an opportunity to offer an alternative raffle at the show.  At Jack’s booth, for a $1, participants will guess the number of hours it took to produce a door with 86 birds done in pyrography.  The winner will win an original piece burned by Jack.  The request was approved.

     NEW BUSINESS:

    Heritage Festival in October:  we are currently unsure of the date, and are requesting that the display be held indoors.  More later.

    NEW BUSINESS: 

    Please bring carvings for a display at Florida Presbyterian Homes for the month of November.  Jack Smith is coordinating this event.  Max height is 10".

    Paul Prebor will head up the Nominating Committee for 2009 Officers.  Brian Waistell will assist.  There are unfilled positions.  Please consider volunteering – Your club needs You!  Positions to be elected:  President, Treasurer, Club Promotion 

    The Peoples Choice Award at the RWC Show will be renamed the James Steele Peoples Choice Award.  The Steele family would like to make a $200 donation to RWC in honor of Jim Steele.  The proceeds will be used to purchase tools, books and DVD’s to assist new carvers in learning to carve.  Supervising the tools was a concern raised, and it was decided that the tools would be available during Monday carving sessions, but not to take away.  Send suggestions for tools and books/DVDs to Jerry Heinicke.

    The family of Betty Crenshaw has donated her tools and resources to RWC.  The tools will be engraved by Jack Smith.  We now need a tool box!  Any volunteers?  See Jerry. 

    Paul Coss recommended that the RWC Show classification "Professional" be changed to "Advanced".  Duane Bickmire requested that the idea be brought up for consideration for the 2010 show, but not for the 2009 show. 

    At our November business meeting, Nancy Coss will pass out a sign up sheet for the Christmas Potluck supper.  The club will supply the meats.  Club members can volunteer to bring in a side dish, salad or dessert.  The Christmas Party will be held at McArthur Center on December 8 at 6:00 pm.  Bring a toy for donation to the Salvation Army – Georgia Bickmire is leading the toy drive.  If you’re not present till the Christmas party, please send your food information to pcoss@tampabay.rr.com, or call Nancy at (863) 293-5263.

    OLD BUSINESS:

     Carving in the park meets November 11-27, December 13.

     MacArthur Center Woodcarving hours are 2pm - 8 pm all Mondays.

     Jack Smith reported that the display at Kathleen Historical Society was an excellent success.  RWC had 5 tables filled and a host of outstanding carvers.

     Carving Classes:  Jack Smith will be teaching Pyrography on Jan 12, 19, 26.  Hours will be 2-5.  No cost for members.  Bring your equipment if you have it.  Otherwise, some equipment will be available.

      Harley will be teaching flowers on Feb 6-8.  Cost $20.

      Janet Miault will teach a 4 session class on Cottonwood bark carving.  Tentatively scheduled on Mondays, Feb 2, 9, 16, and 23,  at 2-5 pm at the McArthur Center.  Cost is $50, which includes the Cottonwood bark blank.  Repond to jbmiault@tbaytel.net  for more info.

      Larry Nowell will be teaching an eagle or seagull carving March 13-16.  Cost is $100 plus $40 for the blank.  Respond to LuFMyers@aol.com for more info.

     We are on exhibit at the offices of the Florida Presbyterian Homes.  Come by and see an inspiring display.

     RWC Christmas Party   Monday, December 8 6:30 pm at the McArthur Center.  Please RSVP to Nancy Coss by Dec 1.  293-5263. Signup to bring a covered dish for 6-8 people.  RWC will provide turkey & ham, rolls & butter, coffee & tea.  Georgia Bickmire is leading a toy donation drive for the Salvation Army. 

     The Friendship Carving Cane project is in full swing.  See Jean Crittenden for ideas and blanks to carve.

     SHOW BUSINESS

     A suggestion was made to put the application on our web page.  Duane was asked to mail a copy of the application to Lu Myers.

     NEW BUSINESS: 

     The annual renewal for us to be a part of Polk Arts Alliance was reviewed.  Motion was made to continue to benefit from the advertising in Artifacts magazine, internet, and the association with the art community.  Fee is $35.

     The club approved the annual contribution to the Florida Presbyterian Homes in appreciation for allowing us the use of the McArhur Center.  A gift of $400 was approved.

     Jerry Heinicke showed the tools and supplies donated by the Crawshaw family in honor of Betty Crawshaw.

     Andrew Steele is giving $200 to RWC in memoriam to his father James Steele, a former member of our club.  The People’s Choice Award next year will be named in honor of James Steele, and the gift will be used to buy tools for our club.  The tools will be available to loan to members and new carvers. 

    The Nominating Committee is looking for help.  RWC needs you.  Join a super team.  See Paul Prebor or Brian Waistell.  Nominations are to be presented by January for the election in February.  President and Treasure are to be elected.

     SHOW & TELL:

     Yves Lymburner showed a French Soldier carving from a salvaged cedar fencepost.  Yves also brought his new feline. The cat was made of 11 slices of butternut, with eyes crafted from painted furniture caps, and pyrography detail in the face and tail.  6 coats of tongue oil finish created a gorgeous piece. 

    Perry Tyser displayed excellent work with a miniature Carousel complete with horse.  Cedar and pine were the woods used, and if was finished with beautiful pointed colors. This was Perry’s first showing.  Great way to start!

     Jerry Heinicke dazzled us with his array of bottle stoppers.  With a usual note of humor, each were appropriately named.

    December News Letter

     
     
         No business meeting was held in the month of December.  Instead, the Carving Club had a fun time at a pot luck dinner.  Ham and turkey was provided by the Club and attendees brought appetizers, salads, side dishes and deserts.  Attendees also brought a new toy for donation to the Salvation Army Christmas angel tree project.  The room was festive with red and green decorations and the conversation was warm and cheerful.  A wonderful time was had by all who attended.
